Experts call for urgent measures to combat youth with mental health problems

Last November 16, 2024, Pope Francis addressed Italy’s National Youth Council at the Vatican stressing the urgency of building robust support systems to help young people navigating serious mental health challenges. The Pontiff called for a collaborative approach that unites families, educators, and communities to address the profound cultural and societal shifts impacting mental health of younger generations.

Experts and leaders are issuing urgent calls for systemic solutions to address the pressures driving the growing epidemic of mental health decline. The crisis stems from a complex interplay of factors reshaping the lives of young people. Traditional support networks are eroding, economic uncertainty looms large, and the rapid evolution of technology has altered the way society connects. While digital platforms have enhanced communication, they have also amplified feelings of isolation and insecurity. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges, triggering a surge in anxiety and depression, particularly among youth already navigating a rapidly changing world.

Experts stress that piecemeal solutions are insufficient to address the scope of this crisis. Instead, they call for systemic changes that prioritize connection, community, and resilience. Modern lifestyles, characterized by individualism and excessive media consumption, have left many young people feeling disconnected. Creating safe spaces, just like the Church, where they can share their struggles and build meaningful relationships is seen as a vital first step.

Education is also at the forefront of the proposed response. Training teachers, caregivers, and community leaders to recognize and respond to mental health issues can help dismantle stigma and foster early intervention. Advocacy for greater investment in mental health services is equally critical, as shortages of trained professionals in many regions leave millions without access to necessary care.

Despite the challenges, there is hope. Youth themselves are being positioned as “artisans of hope,” said Pope Francis, with initiatives aimed at empowering them to transform their struggles into strength. Programs promoting civic engagement, emotional resilience, and mental wellness are seen as key to reversing troubling trends and enabling young people to thrive.
