On April 2, 2025, the Catholic Church commemorated the 20th death anniversary of the death of Pope St. John Paul II, reflecting on his profound legacy and contributions to the Church and the world.
Pope St. John Paul II’s papacy is considered to be one of the most influential papacies in the Catholic Church history. He served the Church as Pope for almost 27 years (1978-2005). He is known for his advocacy for human rights and his deep commitment to interfaith dialogue.

He passed away on April 2, 2005 at the age of 84. On April 2, 2025, the Vatican and Church around the globe commemorated the 20th anniversary of his passing with special Masses, prayer vigils and reflections on his legacy.
Pope Francis, who at present recuperating from a recent illness, wished all a holy year of peace to all and offered blessings to everyone who participated in the commemoration events. The memorial Mass was presided over by cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State. Many faithful, including polish and Vatican officials, participated in it. Pope John Paul II’s global outreach and his tireless service to peace and justice was highlighted by cardinal Parolin in his homily.
Pope John Paul II promoted interfaith dialogue and improved relations with Jews, Muslims and other Christian denominations. His teachings are still applicable even today when the world advocates a culture of war. They continue to inspire Catholics worldwide and challenge them to build a culture of life and peace. His death anniversary remains a significant occasion for reflection on his impact on the Church and the World.
