On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost O.S.A. of Chicago was elected as the 267th Pope, taking the name Leo XIV. His election marked a historic moment as he became the first American to ascend to the papacy. In his inaugural address from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, the new Pope greeted the world with the words, “Peace be with you,” echoing the risen Christ’s greeting to his disciples.
Emphasizing a message of unity and compassion, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the importance of building bridges through dialogue and encounter. He called upon the faithful to work together towards peace and justice, stating, “We are followers of Christ. Christ goes before us. The world needs his light. Humanity needs him as the bridge that can lead us to God and his love.” Continuing the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, Leo XIV reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to social justice, environmental protection, and outreach to the marginalized. He pledged to lead a synodal Church – one that is inclusive, missionary, and open to all.
On May 11, 2025, Pope Leo XIV delivered his first Regina Caeli address, marking a significant moment in his nascent papacy. Speaking to the thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV called for an immediate ceasefire in conflict zones such as Ukraine and Gaza, urging the international community to prioritize humanitarian aid and the release of hostages. He also celebrated the fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan, highlighting the importance of sustained dialogue and diplomacy.
In his first general audience on May 21, 2025 Pope Leo XIV addressed global conflicts, calling for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza and an end to hostilities affecting civilians. He also reiterated the Vatican’s readiness to mediate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, underscoring his dedication to global peace initiatives.
Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate has been met with widespread acclaim. World leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have expressed hope that his leadership will usher in an era of peace and reconciliation. As he embarks on his papal journey, Pope Leo XIV’s message of “Peace be with you” serves as a guiding principle for a Church striving to be a beacon of hope, unity, and love in a fractured world.
